Indifference: The #1 Killer

The Indifference Egg

I live in South Jamaica, Queens, New York and before that Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY. What I witness might shock you

It’s not racism

that keeps the unemployment lines rising

it’s not lack of opportunities

that keeps inner city youth from dying

it’s not decreased federal programs

that keeps the homeless broken and crying

it’s not wall street

that keeps all the blame from you lying

then what is it?

Progress in Entrepreneurship: Listing Goals Before Research

Part of sharing my journey is freely bombarding you with monthly posts of my progress in Entrepreneurship. This month, I was able to get my research of finding the best social media monitoring and marketing tool underway starting with the bookmarks I stored for a couple of months. (I admit I am a bookmark horde. Are you? Share your troubles down below in the comments!)

One of my bookmarks lists a page of the 24 must-have social media marketing tools. Grateful to the authors who contributed to the lengthy-but-goodie post, each tool have descriptive paragraphs and its author’s experience utilizing the tool giving me an overview of what might be right for me to use or not.

Less Productivity with Apps

Google Chrome Store has changed the definition of “apps”. Apps used to be a full blown piece of software the does everything the official website does but for your browser or desktop. It allowed you to quickly be productive instead of bothering to open a web browser or having to go to the site. Now, you have “apps” in the chrome store that just gives you a pretty button with a shortlink to the original website.

Where has the effort gone? Some software companies are using this format as a good thing to push their so-called “apps” through the market. I downloaded Social Pro and Social Lite, a social media marketing “tool” for my Windows 7 desktop. I was amazed to find that all it was were mobile web version of Twitter, Facebook and Google+. Sure, you could make as many accounts as you wanted and it was on the desktop through an “app”, but heck, I could just bookmark the websites and it would do the same thing.

Productivity online through some software companies have become redundant  They make apps that does the same thing you’re already doing. That’s not very productive at all. I guess this is why I became a computer systems analyst. I help people customize their systems to increase productivity and optimize performance. Some people like customizing their appearance, I love to customize GUIs.

My reaction to Leo horoscope for May 25 2013

Leo horoscope for May 25 2013:

You keep repeating the same difficult situation over and over again. This might be because you are caught up in some kind of obligation that you feel guilty letting go of. Or, it might be that there is a certain amount of comfort in living through these circumstances. Or maybe, Leo, you just don’t know how to get off the merry-go-round of emotions that seem to be trapping you in a place that is neither happy nor rewarding. But you could jump off in the same way you would jump off that merry-go-round – just take your best leap of faith and don’t look back.

My Reaction

I somewhat like to wallow in procrastination, at least that’s what my mind and body says when they doesn’t want to cooperate. It’s definitely a team effort, I’m learning. I have to have the correct mindset, energy wavelength and spiritual confidence to not procrastinate my life away. Indeed, I enjoy this unfastening dream until I realize I ‘ve become too use to it that I am content and not happy.

My Leo horoscope for Oct 20 2012 by DailyHoroscope (http://bit.ly/DHmobile)

My new desire is to focus whole heartedly on starting up my business. Anything else in the way will be moved by bulldozer! Leo Oct 20 2012 Before you go off in pursuit of a new desire, you should probably sit down and figure out why you want it so badly. You are now keen on obtaining something that is rather out of character for you, Leo. Yet you have developed a passion for it out of the blue. But your current goal may be reflective of some insecurity or worry that has been on your mind, and maybe you created it to distract you from the real problem. Today is a day for some soul-searching. If you can solve this dilemma, you will feel an immediate sense of relief and renewal. — Copyright © DailyHoroscope. Download it now — http://bit.ly/DHmobile

My Blogging Struggles

Trying to set a launch date for a blog is like trying to cook rice for the first time. You are going to miss the mark and your noodles end up soggy or burnt. You may even have to throw the thing out and start over. That’s how I felt when trying to set launch dates for my blogs.

White Rice Burnt

At first I had everything under control. A good theme, content to manage, and enough content to make a dent in my niche. But then as time went on while setting up appearance of the blog and then the content, how I wanted the blog to look and feel for myself and for users ended up completely different. Most times, the theme ended up not working out. Unfortunately when you ditch a theme, you have to reorganize EVERYTHING. If you spent a week or two for that earlier theme, then you’re going to spend 3 weeks on the next one. If you’re that good, maybe only a week. But still, a week past the deadline for launch.

Time till Deadline

I honestly did not know that building a website, even using WordPress, would take MONTHS. If you have a good list of featured content and lots of activity-driven themes, then it can take months to build. It took me months because of web hosting issues and theme disappointments. I would spend a month or so getting to know a particular theme only for it to break on me if I wanted to do something with it. And then I’d spend some time in Photoshop making my web graphics. Lastly, I’d spend time optimizing my branding and my content.

Though my experience is not done with managing blogs, I can offer some start-up tips:

  1. Research if you want your blog self-hosted or cloud-hosted. The difference in time, money and headache hangs in the balance and is probably the most important tip.
  2. Research what type of blog management system or content management system you might enjoy. I chose WordPress and Blogger, but there are others such as Moveable Type, Joomla, and Posterous.
  3. Research the type of web hosting is right for you and your budget. I went through about 4 different web hosts until I found the right one.
  4. Create a skeleton of how you want your blog to appear as a website. This includes designing the homepage, pages, post themes, and colors. This helped me out a lot narrowing down themes.
  5. Create an overview of content location on your blog. Knowing where content should go is very important and saves time.
  6. Learn your content management system/blogging platform by watching videos and using tutorials. Make notes of interest to help you out later. This comes in handy when you need to edit the blog.
  7. Make sure to have your blog in private status so that when you keep making changes the public will not see them.
  8. Build up your blog’s appearance first and then work on the content. Bringing content in is easy once everything is set up.
  9. Design content themes or templates for easier integration and management. It might sound like a lot of work but it gets the hard stuff out of the way.
  10. Create a social media marketing strategy to get ready for your blog’s launch. If all systems are go, then create a killer campaign to let everyone know you’re an awesome blogger.
  11. Don’t be afraid to put your blog on lock-down if you run into problems before or after launch. I have done this a few times if the blog’s management system goes AWOL.

WordPress

My blogging struggles still continue but at least I have a better grasp and know my way around WordPress and Blogger. I have tried Joomla thinking it might be a bit better than WordPress, however I found that it is much more complicated. Perhaps if I gave it more time I could have used it for my advertising agency’s websites. I’d rather just use WordPress since I am more familiar with it.
