Trying to set a launch date for a blog is like trying to cook rice for the first time. You are going to miss the mark and your noodles end up soggy or burnt. You may even have to throw the thing out and start over. That’s how I felt when trying to set launch dates for my blogs.

White Rice Burnt
At first I had everything under control. A good theme, content to manage, and enough content to make a dent in my niche. But then as time went on while setting up appearance of the blog and then the content, how I wanted the blog to look and feel for myself and for users ended up completely different. Most times, the theme ended up not working out. Unfortunately when you ditch a theme, you have to reorganize EVERYTHING. If you spent a week or two for that earlier theme, then you’re going to spend 3 weeks on the next one. If you’re that good, maybe only a week. But still, a week past the deadline for launch.

Time till Deadline
I honestly did not know that building a website, even using WordPress, would take MONTHS. If you have a good list of featured content and lots of activity-driven themes, then it can take months to build. It took me months because of web hosting issues and theme disappointments. I would spend a month or so getting to know a particular theme only for it to break on me if I wanted to do something with it. And then I’d spend some time in Photoshop making my web graphics. Lastly, I’d spend time optimizing my branding and my content.
Though my experience is not done with managing blogs, I can offer some start-up tips:
- Research if you want your blog self-hosted or cloud-hosted. The difference in time, money and headache hangs in the balance and is probably the most important tip.
- Research what type of blog management system or content management system you might enjoy. I chose WordPress and Blogger, but there are others such as Moveable Type, Joomla, and Posterous.
- Research the type of web hosting is right for you and your budget. I went through about 4 different web hosts until I found the right one.
- Create a skeleton of how you want your blog to appear as a website. This includes designing the homepage, pages, post themes, and colors. This helped me out a lot narrowing down themes.
- Create an overview of content location on your blog. Knowing where content should go is very important and saves time.
- Learn your content management system/blogging platform by watching videos and using tutorials. Make notes of interest to help you out later. This comes in handy when you need to edit the blog.
- Make sure to have your blog in private status so that when you keep making changes the public will not see them.
- Build up your blog’s appearance first and then work on the content. Bringing content in is easy once everything is set up.
- Design content themes or templates for easier integration and management. It might sound like a lot of work but it gets the hard stuff out of the way.
- Create a social media marketing strategy to get ready for your blog’s launch. If all systems are go, then create a killer campaign to let everyone know you’re an awesome blogger.
- Don’t be afraid to put your blog on lock-down if you run into problems before or after launch. I have done this a few times if the blog’s management system goes AWOL.

My blogging struggles still continue but at least I have a better grasp and know my way around WordPress and Blogger. I have tried Joomla thinking it might be a bit better than WordPress, however I found that it is much more complicated. Perhaps if I gave it more time I could have used it for my advertising agency’s websites. I’d rather just use WordPress since I am more familiar with it.
